Captain Bonner serves as the Commander of the Sarasota Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Captain Bonner is a native of Sarasota and a 1999 graduate of Saint Leo University. He has been with the Sarasota Police Department since 1984. His command experience dates back to 2006 as the Narcotics commander assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division and his 2012 promotion as commander of the Criminal Investigation Division. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute (Command Officer Development Course).
The Sarasota Police Department’s Criminal Investigation has four Investigative Sections; Crimes Against Persons, Crimes Against Children, Crimes Against Property and Vice Narcotics. Each section consists of specialized units that investigate crimes related to their expertise. Personnel assigned to Criminal Investigation Division include sworn detectives, civilian employees, and volunteer professionals from the community.
The primary function of Criminal Investigation Division is to conduct follow-up investigations of reported crimes. These investigations consist of interviewing suspects, victims, and witnesses; analyzing information for validity, reliability, and accuracy; and compiling a comprehensive and factual case file to be presented in court.
Specially trained civilian staff conduct crime analysis, investigative support duties, and victim assistance. Detectives are selected through a formal process and receive additional investigative training as a result of their assignment -

The Sarasota Police Department has developed a concept of District Commanders. There are two Lieutenants assigned to zones in the City. The District Commanders are responsible for Law Enforcement and Public Safety issues in their areas. All District Commanders are assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Division and are under the direction of the Captain of Patrol, Captain Lucius Bonner.

The Sarasota Police Department has established four community-based substations as part of the City's emphasis on community policing. Patrol Officers use the substations as local bases of operations, where they can write reports, use computers, meet with citizens and staff the substations at various hours throughout the day and night. Substations are also used to house many community programs and meetings. The substations are located at:

Chief Mikel T. Hollaway began his career with the Sarasota Police Department in 1982 and has held each rank within the agency. He was appointed Chief of Police on May 18, 2010. During his tenure, he commanded the first Community Resource Team which operated under the community policing philosophy that remains in effect today.
The Chief of Police is the executive officer of the Sarasota Police Department and is ultimately responsible for decisions regarding policy, enforcement and use of resources in conjunction with the City Manager and the City Commission. The Chief maintains command authority over all department employees, both sworn and civilian. His office support staff consists of one full-time Executive Assistant and one part-time Administrative Specialist III.

The Support Services Division of the Sarasota Police Department is responsible for most non-operational activities that allow the Sarasota Police Department to provide law enforcement services to the community. The Support Services Division is responsible for ensuring that our officers have the necessary equipment and support to provide high quality law enforcement services to our citizens. Captain Jeffrey Karr heads this division and may be reached at (941) 954-7027.
The Support Services Division administers the vehicle seizure program and the skateboard, scooter, and freestyle bicycle seizure program including: owner notification, fines collection, scheduling hearings, and vehicle or article release.
It is also our responsibility to process, file, and retain the official police reports received by this Agency and to make them available to the public in accordance with the applicable state laws.
The Support Services Division also coordinates outside requests for the services of off-duty officers and provides administrative support for all city-approved special events.
Lastly, the Support Services Division is responsible for the efficient and timely response of S.W.A.T., the Crisis/Hostage Negotiation Team, the Explosive Materials Unit , the Underwater Search and Recovery Dive Team, the Honor Guard, and the Field Force Units in emergency situations.
The Support Services Division consists of the following subdivisions: Fiscal; Payroll and Personnel; Alarm Enforcement; Records; Management Information Services - Computer Operations, Communications/Computer Analyst; Services Unit - Building Maintenance and the Department supply room; Special Response Units - S.W.A.T., Crisis/Hostage Negotiation Team, Explosive Materials Unit , Dive Team, Honor Guard, and Field Force and Emergency Management.
