Officer Warren D. Jones
End of Watch: April 5th, 1975

On April 5, 1975, Officer Warren D. Jones was on patrol when he observed a vehicle parked next to some fuel storage containers.  Upon arrival, Officer Jones found the suspect stealing gas from the industrial bulk fuel facility.

Officer Jones contacted the subject and attempted to arrest him.  While he was handcuffing the suspect, the man gained control of Officer Jones’ duty weapon, a .38 caliber revolver.  As the two struggled for control of the firearm, Officer Jones was shot in the chest.

Officer Jones attempted to return to his patrol car to call for assistance, but the suspect hit him with his issued flashlight.  The suspect fled the scene and Officer Jones was then able to call for help.  He was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds an hour and a half later.  The suspect, an ex-convict, committed suicide following the incident.

Officer Jones had been an Officer with the Sarasota Police Department for two years.

In April 2015, on the 40th anniversary of his death, Adams Lane was dedicated to Officer Jones in honor of his memory and legacy at the Sarasota Police Department.
