Chief of Police Rex Troche
Chief Rex Troche was appointed Chief of Police for the Sarasota Police Department in April 2022 and is the department’s first Hispanic Chief of Police. He leads a department of 190 sworn law enforcement officers and 61 civilian support personnel. Chief Troche promotes community policing initiatives and works in partnership with the community to build trust, transparency, and lasting relationships.
Chief Troche was born and raised in Chicago, IL and his family moved to St. Petersburg, Florida when he was in high school. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of South Florida and a Master of Science degree in Emergency and Disaster Management from Saint Leo University.
Chief Troche began his law enforcement career with the Largo Police Department in 1997 and joined the Sarasota Police Department in 2002. During his tenure, he has been assigned to all four divisions within the Sarasota Police Department as either an Officer or Supervisor. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2013, Lieutenant in 2017, Captain in 2020, and was appointed Deputy Chief in 2021.
Chief Troche is a member of the Florida Police Chiefs Association (FPCA), Hispanic American Police Commanders Officers Association (HAPCOA), International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).
Chief Troche has been married to his wife Kelly for over 23 years and they have 3 daughters.
Deputy Chief of Police Scott Mayforth
Deputy Chief Scott Mayforth has served with the Sarasota Police Department since 1996. Prior to his career with SPD, he served as a Deputy Sheriff with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office from 1994 to 1996. He has held a variety of positions during his tenure with SPD.
As an officer/detective, he served as a Street Crimes Officer, Gang Officer, Field Training Officer, and Intelligence Detective.
He was promoted to Sergeant in 2005 and was assigned to patrol and then to our Planning & Research Unit where he served as Accreditation Manager and Project Manager during construction of our new police headquarters.
When promoted to Lieutenant in 2015, he worked as a Patrol Shift Commander, Patrol Assistant Division Commander where he also served as Commander for our Special Response Teams, and CID Assistant Division Commander where he also served as the Narcotic Unit Commander.
He was promoted to Captain in 2021 and was assigned as our Patrol Division Commander. In 2022, he was appointed as Deputy Chief and now oversees all department operations.
Deputy Chief Mayforth graduated from Boston University in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and has attended dozens of management and leadership schools to include SPI’s Command Officer Development Course, PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police, and IACP’s Leadership in Police Organizations.
