Sarasota Police Department Begins Temporary Telephone Reporting Unit
Beginning today, March 18, 2020, the Telephone Reporting Unit will be operated by sworn law enforcement officers and will be in operation daily from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m., eastern standard time.

Sarasota Police Department Closes Front Desk Access – Community can call or e-mail
Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Sarasota Police Department Front Desk and Records Division access was closed Monday, March 16, 2020, and will remain closed until further notice. This closure will not affect officers responding to calls.

1994 cold case suspect pleads guilty and is sentenced to 25 years in prison
Darryl King, 42, of Sarasota, pleaded guilty Tuesday to Sexual Battery with a Deadly Weapon, a crime that occurred in 1994 but was solved thanks to DNA. King was sentenced to 25 years in prison followed by lifetime sex offender probation by Judge Debra Riva.

Sarasota Police hosting special Operation ‘Dry Streets’ Tweet from the Beat this week
Join the Sarasota Police Department on the next "virtual ride-along." Friday, March 13, 2020, at 6 p.m., Twitter users can virtually “ride along” for another ‘Tweet from the Beat’ with Patrol Officers during night shift. This will focus on patrol operations as well as as Operation 'Dry Streets.'

Woman arrested following traffic stop; 49 grams of MDMA seized
Latoya Carley has been arrested & is facing charges including Trafficking Amphetamine/Methamphetamine (28 grams–200 grams), Sale/Possession with Intent of Controlled Substance with 1000’ feet of a park (MDMA), Possession of a Controlled Substance (Oxycodone) & Giving a False Name while Detained.

Search warrant leads to arrest of 3 people & seizure of firearms and illegal narcotics
On Thursday, February 27, 2020, the Sarasota Police Department Narcotics Unit and Street Crimes Unit, with the assistance of SWAT, executed a search warrant at 3036 31st Way, Sarasota. Three adults were arrested, and illegal narcotics and firearms were seized from the home.

Tree service employee arrested and facing charges of burglary with assault or battery
Francisco Leyva, of Sarasota, is facing charges of Burglary with Assault or Battery (felony) after a victim said she was sexually assaulted at her home on Thursday morning. Detectives believe there are other victims involving Frankie’s Tree Service where this type of incident has happened before.

Crash investigation completed following fatal crash on Longboat Key in December
The fatal traffic crash investigation conducted by the Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit involving two vehicles that happened on Longboat Key on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 is completed. The Sarasota Police Department has a memorandum of understanding with the Town of Longboat Key to assist.

Henry Lee Porter receives no bond following hearing
Judge Charles Roberts has ruled that Henry Lee Porter, 72, will have no bond following a court hearing this week. The court hearing was on Wednesday and Judge Roberts made his decision today, Thursday, January 30, 2020. Porter is currently facing two counts of Sexual Battery with a Child under 12.

Lane Closures for Sarasota Music Half Marathon – Sunday, February 2, 2020
The Sarasota Music Half Marathon and 10K will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2020 from 6:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The race and will feature bands, cheerleaders, lawn gatherings and more along the race course.

Detectives with the Sarasota Police Department are investigating a shooting that happened in the 1000 block of 25th Street, Sarasota. The shooting happened at about 11:40pm Saturday. No injuries have been reported.

High Visibility Enforcement continues in the City of Sarasota to Improve Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety
The Sarasota Police Department is continuing to implement a High Visibility Enforcement program to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The City of Sarasota ranks in the top 25 cities in the state of Florida for traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.
